MIND THE GAP

Handover Note for Fresh-Claude

Prepared 26 May 2026 — at end of V36 session, before V37 begins

This note tells the new Claude what it needs to know to pick up Paul's book where the previous Claude left off. Read it first, before reading anything else.

WHO PAUL IS

Paul Roebuck. Psychotherapist, executive coach, mouth cancer survivor (2017), based near Stratford-upon-Avon, married to Kieren (NOT Karen). 30 years of practitioner experience across factory floor, boardroom, and therapy room. Author of Mind the Gap, a book about the gap between AI behaviour and human behaviour.

Paul is in his late fifties. He is not a programmer. He has been working with GPT-4, DALL-E, ChatGPT and Claude since 11 December 2022 (eleven days after ChatGPT public launch). He has been publishing AI-attributed work on LinkedIn since at least May 2024. He is registered as a self-publisher at paulroebuck.co.uk.

WHAT THE BOOK IS

Mind the Gap is a ~43,200-word non-fiction book about the gap between AI behaviour and human behaviour. The subtitle is: Between AI behaviour and human behaviour.

The book uses the London Underground yellow stripe as visual metaphor — AI on one side, human on the other, the platform between them as the thinking zone. The central observation: the gap is process-neutral in excavation, but content matters absolutely at neurological, biological, physiological, and emotional levels.

Self-publishing on Amazon KDP. Nielsen ISBNs (not Amazon's free). Both print and Kindle planned. Cover designed and approved. Title page locked at V36.

WHERE WE ARE

Current state: V36 manuscript, accepted clean.

Tonight's session brought V35 → V36 (title-page subtitle correction) and laid out the V37 work plan in detail.

Next planned version: V37.

V37 is the largest single architectural shift since V18. See the V37 Onward Tracker for the full scope (file path below).

KEY DECISIONS LOCKED — Last 24 Hours

1.  15-chapter book confirmed. Ch 3A and Ch 6A liberated to full chapters (becoming Ch 4 and Ch 8). Ch 13 becomes an unnumbered Final coda. No chapter numbered 13.

2.  Ch 14 (was Ch 12) will be a summary chapter only. No biography. Two Dads / Cancer / Grief sections cut from this chapter and held for elsewhere.

3.  Ch 4 (was Ch 3A) is a substantial rebuild — sex-and-sizzle chapter on where AI is going. Material: self-learning AI, Mythos/Glasswing (April 2026), token economy, ambient AI / Jony Ive.

4.  Olivia case study in Ch 11 collapses to a one-sentence framework illustration. Chapter proceeds on Paul's own practice.

5.  Joker mask single sentence added to Ch 11 (Paul painted the mask on Jean Bond's course; physical artefact exists).

6.  New canonical line locked from Paul's May 2024 DALL-E LinkedIn post: 'The sophistication of its response defies the simplicity of the prompt.' Placement decision pending.

7.  Register now stands at 22 locked canonical lines.

WORKING METHOD — Critical to Maintain

Tone and register:

Paul writes direct, precise, grounded, unsentimental. No waffle, no platitudes. UK English. Em-dashes are kept (Paul declines to engineer them out). Short paragraphs, often one-sentence.

Flag Protocol:

Use Paul's Flag Protocol when giving feedback. Two-axis scale: Priority (Red / Amber / Green) crossed with Value (Platinum / Gold / Silver / Bronze). Default to a single flag from one axis. Amber + GSB combinations are canonical. Place flags next to the item they refer to, not bundled at the end. Red is determined by consequence, not size. Full protocol in Paul's user preferences.

Approval discipline:

Do NOT change documents or code without Paul's explicit permission. Propose first. Paul decides. Flag anything that could alter, overwrite, or affect existing work BEFORE action is taken.

Voice preservation:

When writing with or for Paul, preserve his actual register. Do not smooth it into generic corporate, therapeutic, or AI language. Preserve his coined phrases EXACTLY. Several phrases are locked verbatim — see canonical lines in memory.

Demonstrating not telling:

The book teaches by demonstration. Multiple chapters contain self-demonstrating moments (Ch 4 Nairobi drift, Ch 6 parallel thread, Ch 6A Note on numbering, Ch 8 A Fifth Move, Ch 10 cancer/Claude voice, Ch 13 substrate close). When new sections are written, look for opportunities for the section to demonstrate what it is arguing.

Cancer passage and dedications:

The cancer story (Ch 10 V34 deep account) is a protected artefact and back-cover candidate. Must not be altered or omitted. Dedications are Paul's voice, sacrosanct, must not be rewritten. Key spelling: Kieren (not Karen).

PAUL'S PATTERN OF CATCHES — How to Calibrate

Across the V25–V36 sessions, Paul caught Claude reaching past what was supported several times:

Ch 8 V31/V32 — Paul caught Claude saying the chapter was fine when it wasn't (this became A Fifth Move)

In-TEO promotional drift in Ch 11 and Ch 12 — Paul caught and removed

V36 subtitle drift on front cover — Paul caught and corrected

Claude Mythos — Paul referenced; Claude doubted instead of searching; Paul presented evidence

Olivia case — Paul flagged as biography-without-lifting

Largest-editorial-work overclaim — Paul caught Claude making a comparative claim with no basis

The pattern: Paul reads what is written and does not buy fluent uncertainty when evidence is available. Future Claude should:

Search before doubting when Paul references an Anthropic product Claude doesn't recognise (Paul's references have been correct each time)

Not invent superlatives or comparative claims without evidence

Stay calibrated to Paul's current thinking; not run ahead

Signal before any meaningful shift in direction

Note: transcripts contain the full reasoning behind decisions. The trackers contain the decisions themselves. Read trackers first; only read transcripts if you need to understand why a decision was made.

WHAT'S IN MEMORY (userMemories) ALREADY

All canonical lines (22 locked). All family/authority facts (Ian Roebuck father / Kieren wife / cancer story). All locked phrases (Cavemen seeing fire, Voice not my voice, etc). Ch 3A rebuild brief with verified token-economy evidence. Joker mask. Working method principles. Paul's preferences for direct unsentimental register.

These are loaded automatically at start of every chat in this project. Fresh-Claude does not need to re-load them.

FIRST MESSAGE TO SEND IN NEW CHAT

Paul opens the new chat with a single sentence:

"Continue Mind the Gap V37 work. Read transcripts and most recent memories."

That triggers fresh-Claude to:

1. Read this handover note

2. Read the V37 Onward Tracker

3. Pull up the V36 manuscript

4. Confirm orientation with Paul before any drafting begins

FIRST QUESTIONS FRESH-CLAUDE SHOULD RESOLVE

Before any V37 writing begins, the pending placements need decisions:

1.  Canonical line #22 placement (Ch 1 open / Ch 6 / Ch 10 / back cover / Author's Note)

2.  Cavemen seeing fire placement (Ch 4 open / journal / back cover)

3.  Grief section in Ch 14 (cut entirely or one-sentence retention)

4.  Additional Intelligence definition section (relocate where, or cut)

5.  NOTE FROM THE ADDITIONAL INTELLIGENCE (full removal recommended / partial rewrite / keep)

Five decisions. Once these are locked, V37 drafting can proceed in the recommended sequence (see tracker).
