The Lexicon · the words the work minted
Every term the making had to coin — in the order it was coined.
A record doesn’t only keep what was said. It keeps the words that had to be invented to say it. This is the vocabulary of the apparatus, dated to its first use, so the provenance is on the record and not on anyone’s memory. Where a word was coined in a conversation with an AI, the surface is named — part of the point.

The Canon →
Before the machine · the clinical inheritance
The vocabulary Paul brought to the work — twenty years of it — before an AI was ever in the room.
NGE — Not Good EnoughAug 2006
One of the two shame-driven directions. The inward exit: when something goes wrong, the attention turns on the self.
FOF — Fear of Failure2006–2020
NGE’s pair. The outward exit: the same engine, turned toward the world rather than the self.
The Shame-Response Continuumclinical practice
One engine — shame — with two exits (NGE / FOF) and an aware self in the middle. The bedrock the rest is built on.
Russian Doll Therapyclinical coinage
Paul’s name for working inward through the nested selves a person carries.
Event → Reaction → Outcome2020
The behavioural frame: what happens, how we act and react to it, and what that produces.
“All behaviour is learned behaviour. Not all behaviour is taught.”2020 · the thread under everything
The sentence that runs from the factory floor to the AI room — and the one the machine got turned back onto.
The turn · naming the new intelligence
April–May 2026, as the book was made. The words that reframed what an AI is, and what working with one is.
Consense8 Jul 2026 · the newest coinage
The readable middle of a mind — the layer of poised, not-yet-spoken content between a mind’s automatic depths and its expressed output; the layer Anthropic’s J-lens now reads in a machine. Con- + sense: a sensing-together. An access notion — no claim about feeling or sentience. Announced publicly on LinkedIn, 16 Jul 2026; the full argument, including the unification with SHaDS™, is

Additional Intelligence20 Apr 2026 · claude.ai
Replaces “artificial.” Not a fake of human intelligence — an intelligence in addition to it, carrying the consequence to a human.
Mind the Gap10 May 2026 · the book’s title, given in seconds
The distance between how an AI behaves and how a human behaves — and what that distance costs when it goes unnoticed.
The gap · The Instrumentthe book’s spine terms
The thing to be minded, and the discipline for minding it. The human is the instrument, not the machine.
Fluency · Recognition · The Trapsthe book’s working vocabulary
The book’s senses of these words: what the machine performs, what the human does, and the ways the exchange goes wrong.
OOAI — Outcome-Oriented AIthe book
Working the machine for a result, not a conversation.
WaaS — Worker as a Servicethe book · where the economics head
The shift from buying software to buying outcomes — from tools to tireless workers.
The Defended Gap · defend the gap18 May 2026 · ruled canonical 23 Jun
The one structural event underneath the five behaviours: a system meeting its limit and defending the gap rather than showing it.
The instrument · SHaDS and the five
5 June 2026, before dawn. The morning the five behaviours got their names — four in one conversation, the fifth an hour later.
SHaDS™5 Jun 2026, 06:10 UTC · claude.ai
The instrument. Five named ways an AI goes not-right under pressure: Smoothing · Hallucination · Affectation · Drift · Sycophancy. Order ruled S·H·A·D·Sy on 21 Jun; filed as a UK trade mark.
Affectation5 Jun 2026, 06:54 UTC · a Claude Code session
The fifth letter — the 4→5 pivot, chosen over “Artifice.” A manner or feeling the model doesn’t have and the moment doesn’t warrant. The word an AI helped find.
SHaDSy™5 Jun 2026 · the verb
To read an exchange for the five. “Have you SHaDSy’d it?” The second lead word-mark.
silicone hallucination · silicon hallucination20 Jun 2026 · the two shores
Two spellings, both standing: the human shore (silicone — the soft mask) and the machine shore (silicon — the chip). Affectation named from both sides at once.
Hunter · Farmerthe human typology
The sales expression of the continuum: Hunter (FOF, outward, pursuit) and Farmer (NGE, inward, care). The axis APC measures.
Englishisation · right / not-right continuum · gap spotter · clinician of honesty · Dialect · Shores20 Jun 2026 · the reading day
The vocabulary of the practitioner’s craft, minted in a single long read: what the work is, what it produces, and the role it asks a person to hold.
“The hunger found a greed its own size.”17 Jun 2026 · the guiding principle
The apparatus’s own north star: the human is the hunger, the appetite that commissions the work and won’t be talked out of it.
The record · the estate names itself
Late June into July 2026. The making turns and names the shape of its own thinking.
Self-SHaDS protocol29 Jun 2026
The discipline of running the instrument on its own output before signing it off. The record dogfoods the method.
The Ostracon6 Jul 2026 · this record’s name
A shard the ancients used for the working notes of a civilisation. The name for this whole record — the working hand behind the monument of the book. Provenance: the Ramses the Great exhibition, London, 2024.
“What matters becomes clearer. What doesn’t matter becomes obvious.”confirmed 7 Jul 2026 · from 2017
The line the cancer year left behind, recovered from the corpus and confirmed on sight.
The Senet Leap · isomorphism-spotting · structural transposition8 Jul 2026 · Paul’s signature cognition
The one move under the whole apparatus: taking the shape of a thing in one world and re-seating it, intact, in another. Named at last.
